Fidelity® Draws from Teen Input to Create Industry-First Baskets Feature for Investing

Release Date: 09 Apr 2024
Research: General
  • Three New Baskets Inspired by App Users, Designed by Fidelity Investment® Analysts: Clothes, Shoes & Beauty; Gaming, Social Media & Connectivity; and Entertainment
  • New Investing Option Includes Teen-Friendly Resources about Basket Investing

As the next step in Fidelity Investments’ commitment to educating and supporting the next generation on their financial journeys, the firm is launching Fidelity Youth® Baskets, a first-of-its-kind feature available today for teens through the free Fidelity Youth® app. Fidelity Youth Baskets are based on input from teens and built on Fidelity’s existing basket portfolios technology, to help Fidelity Youth app users enhance their investing knowledge and skills.

“One of our primary goals in launching the Fidelity Youth app was to not only make financial education more accessible to teens, but also give them an opportunity to put those learnings into action,” said Kelly Lannan, SVP of Emerging Customers at Fidelity. “Teens are interested in investing but are often overwhelmed by their options and unsure where to start. With the new baskets capability, we’re helping teens learn how to diversify their portfolios in a simplified experience based on direct feedback from teens themselves.”

After surveying active Fidelity Youth app users about the trends and sectors they are most interested in, a team of Fidelity analysts created three thematic investment baskets: Clothes, Shoes & Beauty; Gaming, Social Media & Connectivity; and Entertainment. Each basket includes 10 individual securities. With this new capability, teens will be able to hone their investing skills by managing a portfolio of diversified investments reflecting their own interests. Similar to Fidelity’s existing basket portfolios experience for investors aged 18+, each basket contains multiple stocks managed like a single investment. Parents and guardians continue to be able to oversee account activity and can invest alongside teens, as these baskets will be added to the Fidelity Basket Portfolios experience for investors aged 18 and older.

When teens go to purchase an investment using Fidelity Youth Baskets, they will be greeted with a teen-friendly educational video and animations teaching them about basket investing, including how baskets work and what makes them unique, for teens to feel knowledgeable about investing through Fidelity Youth Baskets.

The launch of Fidelity Youth Baskets is the latest in the firm’s ongoing focus to fostering financial mobility for the next generation of investors and encouraging healthy saving and investing behavior. In addition to offering free products like Fidelity Youth to help young investors get started, Fidelity has launched digital financial education experiences, including Women Talk Money: Teen Girl Learning Series, a free digital, self-paced learning series designed to help parents and teen girls build healthier money habits. Fidelity also works to provide opportunities for financial mobility to more people through programs like Invest in My Education (ME), a $250 million social impact initiative that provides access to education and ongoing support to historically underserved students.
